Handy Tips
- High-current workhorse – Rated for 3A versus the 1N400x series' 1A, making it the go-to choice for beefier power supplies and chargers.
- Mind the polarity – The banded end is the cathode (negative). Fit it backwards in a rectifier and it won't conduct, or it'll fail under reverse voltage.
- Bridge rectifiers – Four 1N5408s build a robust full-bridge rectifier for transformer supplies up to a few amps — this pack gives you a spare too.
- Flyback protection – Excellent as a freewheeling diode across relays, solenoids and motors to clamp back-EMF spikes.
- Not for switching – Standard recovery makes it unsuitable for high-frequency switch-mode supplies; reach for a 1N5819 Schottky or UF400x fast diode there.
- Derate for heat – Above ~75 °C ambient, reduce the forward current to keep the junction within its temperature limit.
- Leave the leads long – The axial leads help shed heat; don't crop them too short on continuous high-current loads.
