Handy Tips

1. Output logic is inverted — LOW means obstacle detected — When an obstacle is present the signal pin (S) outputs LOW (0V), and HIGH when the path is clear. Account for this in your code by triggering your obstacle response on a LOW state or falling edge — the reverse of what many beginners initially expect.
2. Use the EN pin to save power — The EN (enable) pin allows you to switch the sensor on and off from your microcontroller. In battery-powered robots, pulse EN HIGH only when a reading is needed rather than running the IR transmitter continuously — the IR LED draws significant current and disabling it between readings meaningfully extends battery life.
3. Adjust range with the multi-turn potentiometer — Turn the trimmer clockwise to increase detection distance and anticlockwise to decrease it. Make adjustments in small increments and test against a white A4 sheet of paper at your target distance — white surfaces reflect IR well and give a consistent calibration reference.
4. Surface colour and reflectivity affect range significantly — Dark or matte black surfaces absorb infrared and may only trigger at a fraction of the maximum 40cm range. Shiny or white surfaces reflect strongly and trigger at greater distances. Calibrate your sensitivity setting against the actual surface colours present in your robot's operating environment.
5. Ambient light can cause false readings — Direct sunlight or strong incandescent lighting floods the IR receiver and can cause permanent false triggers regardless of obstacle presence. For outdoor or brightly lit environments, shield the sensor face from direct overhead light using a small 3D printed hood, or switch to a time-of-flight (ToF) sensor for better ambient light immunity.
6. Minimum detection distance is 2cm — Objects closer than 2cm may not trigger the sensor reliably due to the geometry of the transmitter and receiver beams not overlapping at very short range. For applications requiring detection of very close obstacles, mount the sensor slightly recessed or angled outward, or use a separate short-range contact bumper switch.
7. Ideal for line-following and edge detection too — Beyond obstacle avoidance, this sensor works well for line following (detecting the contrast between a dark line and a light floor) and table-edge detection (sensing the drop-off on a surface). Adjust the sensitivity trimmer to the minimum range needed for each application to reduce false triggers from background reflections.
