Handy Tips for Using the DC 5V Fixed Step-Down Module:
This module outputs a fixed 5V — the output voltage cannot be adjusted. It is specifically designed to supply 5V microcontrollers, development boards, and peripherals such as Arduino Uno, Nano, Raspberry Pi, servo motors, relay modules, and USB-powered devices. As a switching buck converter, it is far more efficient than a 7805 linear regulator, generating significantly less heat and wasting far less power — especially at higher input voltages.
The input voltage must always be at least 1.5V higher than the 5V output — meaning a minimum input of 6.5V is required for stable operation. A standard 5V USB supply will not work as an input as it provides insufficient headroom. Use a 9V, 12V, or 24V supply instead. The module safely accepts inputs up to 24V, making it ideal for vehicle power systems, solar setups, and industrial supply rails.
The module is rated for 3A continuous output current, making it capable of powering multiple microcontrollers and peripherals simultaneously from a single module. For loads approaching 3A, ensure adequate airflow around the module. For sustained loads above 2A, attaching a small heatsink to the main regulator IC is recommended to prevent thermal shutdown and ensure long-term reliability.
As a switching regulator, this module produces a small amount of high-frequency switching noise on the output — this is normal. The onboard capacitors suppress this to ≤30mV under load. For noise-sensitive loads such as audio circuits, RF modules, or precision ADC measurements, add an additional 100µF electrolytic capacitor and a 100nF ceramic capacitor across the output terminals, placed as close as possible to the sensitive load.
When wiring the module, always verify input polarity before applying power — reverse polarity will damage the module instantly. Connect IN+ to your positive supply rail and IN- to ground, then connect OUT+ and OUT- to your load. If your circuit does not include reverse polarity protection, a series Schottky diode such as an IN5819 on the input line provides a simple and low-cost safeguard with minimal voltage drop.
