Handy Tips
- Match your driver current to 1.0A per phase — Set your stepper driver (A4988, DRV8825, TMC2209) current limit to 1.0A per phase using the Vref trimmer. Running above this continuously will overheat the motor windings and degrade performance — running below will reduce torque and cause missed steps under load.
- Voltage rating is not your supply voltage — The 3.4V rated voltage refers to the motor's resistive voltage drop at rated current, not the supply voltage for your driver. Stepper drivers are designed to run from 12V–24V supplies and regulate current electronically — always run from the recommended driver supply voltage for best performance.
- 200 steps per revolution, microstepping multiplies this — At 1.8° per full step you get 200 steps/rev. With a TMC2209 or DRV8825 set to 16x microstepping this becomes 3200 steps/rev, dramatically improving smoothness and positional resolution — ideal for 3D printer axes and CNC applications.
- Shorter body means less torque than standard NEMA 17 — At 34mm body height this is a slim/short NEMA 17. It produces less holding torque (0.29Nm) than a standard 40mm or 48mm body NEMA 17 (typically 0.4–0.6Nm). It is well suited for extruders, light CNC axes, and pan/tilt mechanisms but may struggle on heavily loaded or fast-moving print axes.
- Identify winding pairs before wiring — Use a multimeter in continuity mode to identify the two coil pairs before connecting to your driver. Pairs will show low resistance (approximately 3.4Ω) between them. Mixing wires from different coils will cause the motor to vibrate and not rotate — a very common wiring mistake.
- TMC2209 recommended for quiet operation — Paired with a TMC2209 driver in UART mode, this motor runs near-silently using StealthChop interpolation — making it an excellent choice for desktop 3D printers, camera sliders, and any application where noise is a concern.
- Allow airflow around the motor body — Stepper motors run warm to hot under normal operation (Class B insulation is rated to 130°C). In enclosed spaces or high-ambient environments, ensure adequate airflow around the motor body. If the motor is too hot to touch comfortably (>60°C case temp) reduce the driver current slightly.
