Getting Started with 3D Printing in George, South Africa

If you've been curious about 3D printing but have no idea where to start — you're not alone. It's one of the most common conversations we have at our George store. People walk in having seen incredible 3D printed objects online, and the question is always the same: "Can I actually do this at home, and where do I even begin?"

The good news? Getting started with 3D printing in South Africa has never been easier or more affordable. Whether you're in George, Knysna, Mossel Bay or anywhere along the Garden Route, this guide will walk you through exactly what you need to know — from choosing your first printer to printing your first object.

Why Creality Is the Go-To Choice for Beginners in South Africa

When it comes to beginner-friendly 3D printers, Creality is the brand we recommend time and again. They've become the world's most popular consumer 3D printer brand because they've cracked the balance between price, reliability and print quality that matters most to someone just starting out.

Here in South Africa, import costs and support matter enormously. With Creality, you get:

• Affordable entry points — printers starting from around R4,999, making 3D printing genuinely accessible

• A massive online community — hundreds of thousands of users sharing tips, fixes and print settings

• Local support — at Just Colours in George, our team has hands-on experience with every Creality model we stock

• Consistent quality — from the Ender series to the newer KE and SPARKX models, Creality delivers great results from day one

Just Colours tip: If you're completely new to 3D printing, the Creality Ender 3 V3 KE is our most recommended starter printer. Fast, reliable, Wi-Fi connected — and we stock it right here in George.

What You'll Need to Get Your First 3D Print Done

A lot of beginner guides overcomplicate this. Here's the honest, simple version of what you actually need:

1. A Printer

Choose a model that suits your budget and intended use. For home hobbyists, the Ender 3 range is ideal. For those wanting faster printing and more features, the Creality SPARKX i7 is a significant step up.

2. Filament

Filament is the "ink" of 3D printing — the plastic material that gets melted and shaped layer by layer. For beginners, always start with PLA. It's the easiest to work with and produces great results. We stock standard PLA, dual-colour silk filament and glow-in-the-dark options right here in George.

3. A 3D Model File

You don't need to design anything from scratch. Sites like Thingiverse and Printables have thousands of free, ready-to-print designs — phone stands, plant pots, organisers, toys and more.

4. A Slicer (Free Software)

A slicer converts your 3D model into instructions the printer can follow. Creality Print is free, beginner-friendly and works perfectly with all Creality printers. We can help you set it up in-store when you buy your printer.

Realistic expectation: Most people get their first successful p

Common First-Print Mistakes — and How to Fix Them

Most beginners run into the same handful of issues. Here is what to watch for and how to fix them.

First layer not sticking: Almost always a bed levelling issue. The Ender 3 V3 KE's auto-levelling solves this automatically — it is one of the main reasons we recommend it for beginners.

Stringing between parts: Thin wisps of filament stretching between sections usually mean retraction settings need adjustment. In Creality Print, try increasing retraction distance to 0.8–1.2mm. Also check your filament is not damp — PLA absorbs moisture over time, especially in the Garden Route's humid coastal climate.

Warping on larger prints: If corners are lifting off the bed, increase your bed temperature to 60–65°C for PLA and ensure there is no draft from a fan or air conditioner blowing across the printer.

Layer shifting: Prints that shift sideways suddenly usually mean print speed is too high. Drop speed to 50–60mm/s while learning, then increase from there.

Bad overhangs: Parts sticking out into thin air need support structures. Enable supports in your slicer for any overhang beyond 45°. Creality Print does this automatically if you enable Support in the print settings.

We have helped hundreds of people through exactly these problems at our George store.
